Motor Load Monitor and Over-Current Protector System

A technique is described whereby a multi-loop control system provides the ability to monitor the RMS current of electric motors, while acting as a motor over-current protector. The concept is particularly useful in multi-joint robotic applications whereby faster cycle times can be achieved when the robot engineer can monitor RMS current and optimize the robot application accordingly. In certain robotic multi-joint applications, the application cycle time is not limited by the peak motor speed but by the maximum RMS current capability of the electric motors. Typically, robotic engineers had no way of monitoring the RMS current during a given move.
