This method accomplishes the copying of records of one format to records of another format using a field processor and a single buffer for input and output and with padding or truncation of fields done in place. A field processor takes as input a record identifier, a list of field identifiers, and a list of field values. A read or write operation is specified, and the indicated values are read from (or written to) the indicated record. This is done in the order specified by the list of field identifiers. There is a distinguished, null field identifier that the field processor recognizes. This paired with a length may appear in the list of field identifiers. The corresponding field value (of the given length) is skipped over in reading or writing field values.
