Method to Read Bootstrap Record From Unknown Formatted Device

This is a simplistic method for a subsystem controller to read a bootstrap record from an input/output (I/O) device. In Fig. 1, the Subsystem Controller is an I/O processor (IOP) which interfaces the Processor Unit to one or more I/O devices. In Fig. 1, each device (DEV) is a tape or DASD (direct access storage device, such as a magnetic disk). The bootstrap record is a data set used by the software contained in the Subsystem Controller's Read Only Store (ROS). The bootstrap record contains reference "1" or "2" device commands (Fig. 2). (Image Omitted) Software, contained in the Subsystem Controller's ROS or EPROMs, (electrically programmable read only memories), will read the bootstrap record from an unknown formatted device.
