This article describes techniques for managing buffers that are used for storing information that is displayed on a monitor. The buffer format includes a prefix field concatenated to a data field. The prefix field is further partitioned into a plurality of subfields with control information that is used for chaining buffers to form a logical buffer, reading and writing of selected bytes within a buffer, and allocating and deallocating buffers. Fig. 1 shows a schematic of the buffer. The prefix field is partitioned into next buffer address field, length field, insert pointer field, read pointer field and queue chain address field. The length field, insert pointer field and read pointer field apply only to a particular buffer.
