A method is described which provides multiple entry points throughout the AIX* kernel for directory modifications. This new method centralizes all modifications of a file system directory entry into one subroutine. This routine is then called by all other subroutines which need modifications made to directory entries. Prior to this method, many different subroutines made modifications to directory entries. This resulted in these subroutines being unnecessarily complex, and also required that, any time the physical attributes or characteristics of directory entries change, all of the various subroutines which modify directory entries be changed, as well. This new subroutine which modifies directory entries supports three distinct directory entry operations: LINK, CREATE, and DELETE.
