Abstract

A pinless connector structure has been developed for electrically connecting a printed circuit board (PCB). The unit has a flexible cable with button-type connectors adapted to make electrical contact with pads on the PCB. A mechanical actuator and frame are used for positioning the cable and forcing the buttons into contact with the PCB. (Image Omitted) The connector system includes a flexible cable with circuitry 1 (Fig. 1) sandwiched between two polyimide (PI) insulating overlays 2. The circuitry terminations are soldered to 100-mil circular snap contacts 3. The PI coating terminates on the underside of the snap contact. The snap-button configuration is designed to deflect when compressed downward and to resume its original shape when the force is removed. A 30-mil button 4 on the inside of the contact is goldplated.
