An improved method for allowing the Data Service Unit (DSU) to another DSU communication without disturbance of the Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) to DTE conversation. The method uses a special header to discriminate data coming from the DTEs and the service messages issued from the DSUs on digital links. Methods and systems for controlling a modem network and thereby improving its overall efficiency have become more and more necessary in highly sophisticated communication networks. Referring to the figure, the method is described in the case of tailing with an analog segment, but it applies also without tailing or in the case of multipoint operation through digital networks. On these networks, DSU2 is unable to discriminate between the data issued by DTE A and the supervisory message sent by DSU1.
