An Automated Assembly Process Cell is serviced by a bi-level Material Handling System in which elevator transport belts, at right angles to a lower level of roller conveyors, are raised or lowered, as required, to laterally transfer totes containing workpieces or parts from/to the roller conveyors, to/from workstations arranged along the length of a closed-loop belt driven transfer line at a higher level. Fig. 1 shows the Pallet Transfer Line level of a typical Cell. It is seen that Pallet Transfer Line 1 is a continuous loop which carries Pallet(s) 2, empty or containing a Workpiece, to successive Workstations 3 each with a Robot 4 which loads, unloads, and/or performs some assembly function on a Workpiece within its Envelope 5.
