Abstract

The drilling spindle package described uses an air piston-driven vertical axis and a microprocessor which can track various processes, such as drill cycle verification, blind hole drilling, RPM monitoring, performance monitoring, and z-axis servo control, as well as a cycle time of four drill motions per second. The spindle package can be tested off-line and then quickly installed to minimize downtime. The spindle package works in the following manner. A pneumatic servo valve is used to control the position of the z- axis piston. It is a highly-responsive, low-power valve capable of several million cycles. The piston is air controlled and is supported on air bearings for low friction and longlife (several million cycles).
