An electrical connector is shown in Figs. 1A and 1B which significantly increases the number of insertions and extractions while maintaining good electrical continuity and reliability. A means of significantly increasing the connector insertion life for CHAMP*-type and similarly constructed connectors is shown in Fig. 1. This design also protects the connector from dirt, contaminants, and oxidation when the connector is not physically inserted to its mating pair. A protective plastic cover 10 is provided with an insert 11 of absorbant open cellular material that is impregnated with a controlled amount of high quality lubricant, such as polyphenyl ether. The absorbant material may be either impregnated before or after insertion into the plastic cover or carrier.
