This article describes a high performance blink method using only a graphics APA (all-points-addressable) plane. It has few steps of microcode and is done by hardware using an 'Exclusive OR' operation. It has no effect on many application programs already existing. Each APA plane has been designed by hardware to be able to operate logically ("AND", "OR", "Exclusive OR", etc.). To implement this method, at least two APA planes must be prepared. One is used as the 'foreground' plane, and another is used as the 'background' plane in this method. Characters which are displayed as blink attribute on the screen are located on the foreground plane. As shown in the figure, some full dot pattern cells are located on the background plane and they are located relatively in the same position as characters on the foreground plane.
