A method is described which provides instructions for supporting the data link layer of digital communication systems. Asynchronous communication is one of the most common forms of communications in use today. Every host and personal computer (PC) known supports this form of communication. However, its use has been primarily interactive (in the form of preprogrammed terminals) to hosts. With the advent of PCs, the use of asynchronous communications has been dramatically increased. Due to the infancy of the computer age, no general programming interface has been defined for such communications in multitasking environments. The read operations for digital communication systems can be classified in to three classes: 1.
