A typewriter is provided with both horizontal and vertical (two-dimensional) tab stops to tab a carrier both horizontally and vertically to various locations. When filling in a pre-printed form, for example, each line may begin at a different horizontal position. A forms-tab feature enables setting both horizontal and vertical (two-dimensional) tab stops so that an operator can activate the tab key to move the print position horizontally and vertically to the next tab stop. In standard horizontal tabulation, the operator can set and clear horizontal tab stops. A set of tab stops is referred to as a "tab grid". The print position is moved to the "next" tab stop by pressing the Tab key. Some typewriters have the capability of saving multiple tab grids and a method for selecting the tab grid to be used.
