In a data transmission system, Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) must be able to provide the clock to the attached modems for a plurality of frequencies, such as 2400, 3200, 4800, 7200, 9600, 12000 and 14400 Hz. For generating these frequencies, the DTE is provided with a clock the frequency of which is a multiple of the clock of the frequencies to be generated. Thus, for the above examples, a 144 kHz clock is suitable. According to this article each frequency F to be generated is associated with a variable Scrambler length N = 144000/f, and with a three-bit control word C1 C2 C3 according to the following Table 1.
