A technique is described whereby an instrumentation system is provided for a crosspoint switching network with centralized control. In a typical multiprocessor system, the interconnection network provides the key component for the realization of system coupling. By definition, all communication traffic in the system passes through the interconnection network. Therefore, the network is one of the most important components for instrumentation, as the measurements taken at the network reflect the behavior of the entire system. Network measurements provide the overall traffic activity to and from each system component and reveal conditions which can become useful indicators for fine-tuning the system.
