With the current trend in small data-processing systems going toward a non-restrictive placement of cards, a scheme is needed to tell the user where a failing device is located. Assuming a system has the capability of putting up eight digits on its control panel, the leading four digits can be used as box number/ slot number/program check/processor check indicators, and the trailing four digits can be used for display for a System Reference Code (SRC). During IPL of the system, one of the first functions is to determine which hardware devices are present. This is accomplished by selecting each card one at a time and stepping through the combinations of box and slot. During this addressing mode, each type of card (disk, diskette, tape, inboard workstation, outboard workstation, etc.
