Shaft Escapement With Part Orientation Detection

An escapement device is described which presents parts for robot access along with part orientation information. The escapement device 10 (Figs. 1 and 2) is illustrated for a part (shaft) 11 with orientation x-x or y-y but can be adapted easily for numerous cylindrical parts. Device 10 consists of horizontal block 12 (mounted to a suitable stand 13) containing cylindrical groove 14 on the top surface. Aligned at one end of groove 14 is escapement slider 15, and at the other end is attached double-acting pneumatic cylinder 16 with attached feeder piston 17. Escapement slider 15 is mounted to block 12 using slider mounting pins 18. Slider 15 can move freely in a horizontal direction by means of holes 19 in the escapement slider. Escapement slider 15 is retained against block 12 by spring 20.
