A device is described which produces rapid acquisition of the readback profile of magnetic recording heads. The head is rapidly stepped across the surface of a magnetic disk so that a head profile can be acquired in a short time. A very short section of a narrow track written with transitions is used as the probe by gating the readback signal in synchronism with the revolution period of the disk. A tuned amplifier operating at the readback frequency of the written transitions senses the signal from this section of track on each revolution, and the data can be displayed on a suitable monitor and also stored for further analysis. The probe can be made by DC erasing a wide written track to form a stream of magnetic transitions whose minimum width is limited only by the side-writing characteristics of the head.
