Abstract

The air bearing surface (ABS) of a magnetic head/slider combination 1, comprising, for example, two rails 2 and 3, is cylindrically-shaped. Additionally, the thickness of the slider is smaller along the leading edge 4 than along the trailing edge 5. Thin-film magnetic heads 6 and 7 are provided in the area of the trailing edge on rails 2 and 3. As shown in Fig. 1, and in the more exaggerated schematic side view of Fig. 2, the slider is wedge-shaped. The slider/head combination is shown in Fig. 2 above the surface 8 of, say, a magnetic disk rotating in the direction of arrow 9. Radius R of the cylindrically-shaped ABS is large and may be as much as 10 m. The ABS and disk surface 8 include a pitch angle a during flight.
