A technique is described whereby a multiplexed serializer/deserializer (SERDES) is used to provide power-efficient operational support to multiple devices, as used in remote computer terminal applications. The multiplexer is designed to significantly reduce power requirements, particularly when battery-operated, portable devices are employed. The multiplexed SERDES, as shown in the figure, consists of programmable peripheral interface (PPI) multiplexer 10 and is used to provide selection controls for single asynchronous SERDES unit 11 through gate logic circuits 12. The figure shows, for example, three serial devices, touch panel 13, RF modem 14 and RS-485 15 as attached units; however, the concept is not limited to these three devices, but may extend to many devices.
