This article describes a method for displaying a menu when the display area for the menu is small in relation to the menu size, and the whole menu cannot be displayed. This happens, for example, in a multi-window environment, when a window which contains a menu is reduced in size, or the number of the menu items if increased without enlarging the window. Background A menu item is usually represented by a character string or an icon. In the above case, a scaling technique can be used to display the whole menu. However, scaling techniques generally need a lot of processing, which substantially decreases the performance of the menu display. Reduction in size also has an adverse effect on the quality of the character string or the icon, and decreases their distinguishability.
