A method is disclosed to detect the routing error in a self-routing switching network. Many of multistage interconnection networks, such as baseline based and shuffle exchange networks, as shown in the figure, have the capability of self-routing. Namely, the destination output port addresses can be uniquely encoded using the same codes for output lines at stages. Therefore, any bit stream from any one of the input ports can be delivered to a destination output port by attaching the destination address in front of the bit stream. Each stage then examines the output lines address for itself and determines the direction to forward the bit stream.
