This article describes a technique for observing the whole shape of an edge of an object while emphasizing its distortion by using a newly designed step mirror. Fig. 1 shows a positional relation between an object 11 and an observation instrument 10, such as television camera, microscope etc. The instrument 10 can be positioned at either a position 14 in front of the object 11 or a position 15 off to the right, for example. The object 11 has an edge 12 which is distorted with respect to a straight line 13 extending between points P and Q. The distortion is indicated by "d". When we observe the edge 12 entirely though the instrument 10 at the position 14, the distortion of the edge 12 is too small compared with the length (l) of the edge 12 as shown in Fig. 2(A).
