In microprocessor systems, the requirement often arises to update register or memory values that are wider than the width of the microprocessor data bus, i.e., updating a 20-bit register value from a 16-bit microprocessor bus. Occasionally, these register values have the additional constraint that all bits of the register must be updated at the same time. That is, it is unacceptable for the microprocessor to segment a wider register into two smaller registers and update them on sequential instructions. A particular application in which this problem arises is the control of motors of a tape drive.
