A method is described which provides for an orderly shutdown of the RT-PC hard file system in the event of an unexpected power-off condition. It allows the system to minimize the risk of file read/write errors and to return to a known state in the case of a power glitch. Unexpected power-off conditions and power glitches cause great problems for computer systems. In most cases there is no warning and thus very little time to minimize the damage that can result from a sudden power failure. This method allows the IBM RT-PC Enhanced ESDI (EESDI) hard file adapter to provide an orderly shutdown of the file system. This allows the system to minimize the potential errors that can accompany a catastrophic power-off condition. The RT-PC uses an Enhanced Small Device Interface (ESDI) to attach hard files.
