Abstract

This article describes a local area network (LAN) controller adapter with a pluggable media dependent modem and a LAN controller carrier adapter. By replacing the pluggable media dependent modem, the LAN adapter can be used on LANs with different medias. LAN plays one of the major roles in today's computer communications of effective infor- mation sharing. For LAN development, parameters, such as the size of (Image Omitted) the LAN (distance and nodes), transmission speed, media (spare telephone wires, coaxial cable, fiber optics, infrared link, etc.) for the data transmission, the environment (business offices, factories, department stores, or university campus, etc.) for which LAN will be installed, and protocols of the LAN, are important LAN design considerations.
