A method is described that allows a hard file adapter to significantly increase system performance by using a technique that allows pending read commands to be executed contiguously. This method minimizes the number of unproductive file revolutions that occur between read operations. The IBM RT-PC Enhanced ESDI (EESDI) hard file adapter card uses an on-card processor to control read and write operations for up to three hard file devices. Up to two commands for each file can be 'stacked' on the card at one time. The timely execution of these commands is paramount for good system performance. This method provides a technique that significantly decreases idle file revolutions between contiguous read commands of sequential data.
