A method is described that may be used to extend the X version 10.4 Network Windowing protocol such that: 1. it can exploit features of a specific machine when both the X client (application) and the X server (display server) are on the same type of machine, and 2. do so in a way that is transparent to other manufacturer's machines on the network. X Windows is a network windowing system for bit-mapped displays. The current network protocol used is called X Version 10.4 protocol, commonly referred to as X version 10. This protocol is adhered to by all those who want to communicate with all other X version 10 machines. The X version 10 protocol is fixed and non-extendable. Manufacturers are limited to the functions provided for in the existing protocol.
