A gripper attachment is described which is capable of picking up surface-mounted devices of a variety of shapes and sizes. The devices are picked up by a vacuum needle and centralized on the needle by two independent orthogonal pairs of fingers. The gripper provides a faster robot cycle time as the device is centered during movement between pick and place. The Surface Mount Device (SMD) placement tool illustrated is suitable for use with robotic systems and has the ability to: 1) automatically centralize a range of different size SMDs without mechanical adjustment to the gripper. 2) place the SMDs very close to other components on the PCB.
