The Structured Query Language (SQL) developed for use with relational database systems is used to describe database operations to the IBM Database Manager. Sorting the output records of database tables is one such operation. Other database products employ a system of control blocks which implement control functions and record accesses specified by a given SQL statement. These control blocks are subsequently manipulated by control block specific functions at execution time. This requires a relatively complex supervisor function to control the execution environment and invocation of the database manipulation algorithms. This new method employs the Sort threaded-code operator which functions in a common environment with the other threaded-code operators.
