The The subject protocol and the related apparatus enable the connection or disconnection of slave devices physically connected to a master device by a serial link including only two twisted wire pairs used for information exchange in normal operation. On the serial link, the connection/disconnection protocol is totally asynchronous and does not require clock recovery for the connection or disconnection operation itself. The disconnection order is provided to a device by transmission of an asynchronous "freeze" command, while the connection order is provided by transmission of an "unfreeze" command, both "freeze" and "unfreeze" commands using a particularity of the Manchester code.
