Abstract

An assembly is disclosed for applying a compliant load to the edge of tape in a tape storage device. Fig. 1 shows the assembly. The load is applied to the edge of the tape by cylindrical pieces or buttons 10, and the buttons are restrained laterally in the surrounding plastic housing 12, but are free to move vertically. A plastic cover keeps the assembly intact. The load force is supplied by gravity acting on the mass of the buttons. The buttons are sized so that they exert the desired load. (Image Omitted) This concept for guiding has many advantages over present guiding schemes. The use of separate guiding buttons permits a wide choice of materials; e.g., they can easily be made of a hard ceramic for good wear properties. The guiding action is truly compliant because each button is independent of the others.
