A method and hardware implementation is described to facilitate switched digital communications systems to communicate over the public switched network without using external modems. Additionally, the existing least-cost routing algorithms are minimally impacted, few additional ports are required, hardware costs are reduced, and the existing error analysis is conserved. Today, many communications switching systems employ an approach like the one illustrated in Fig. 1 to provide digital communication over the public switched system. A digital phone interface is attached to a digital phone to RS-232C converter. The RS-232C converter is (Image Omitted) cabled to a modem which is looped back into an analog phone port of the communications switching system.
