Abstract

A thin film magnetic head is shown in which the transitions between the yoke and poletips are positioned to achieve a structure optimized for writing. The thin film magnetic head comprises a first magnetic pole piece 1 having a pole tip area 2 separated by transition 3 from the thicker yoke structure 4. A coil 5 is provided which is electrically and magnetically insulated from pole pieces 1 and 6 which are separated in the pole tip area by a nonmagnetic material to form a transducing gap g. The second pole piece 6 has a pole tip area 7 separated by transition 8 from thicker yoke structure 9. It can be shown that saturation of thin film magnetic heads in writing occurs at the transitions 3, 8 between the relatively thick yoke structure 4, 9 and the pole tips 2, 7.
