Described is an automated document approval system using electronic signatures. An electronic signature is information appended to the bottom of a file by the system. The signature itself is made up of the userid, node and a specially calculated key character. A file within the system, consisting of spaces to be filled in by a user, is considered to be an electronic form. The form will appear on the terminal as a page to be completed. The areas to be filled in may be marked by underbars, i.e., ____. The development and installation of a form can be quickly accomplished by the user. Once signed, a uniquely calculated key is associated with each document which assures that the document is not altered during the approval or signing process. Notes can be added by signers during the approval cycle.
