Serial Data Link Design for an Automotive Display System

This article describes a serial data link (SDL) circuit arrangement which interfaces a touch controller to an advanced display system controller (ADSC) and a software implementation of the serial data link in an automotive environment. The single-wire bidirectional SDL disclosed herein replaces the conventional parallel design requiring six interface wires with associated input/output (I/O) circuitry. This I/O circuitry replaced by the SDL is fairly complex, consisting of appropriate signal conditioning, transient suppression and short protection circuitry to guarantee proper operation in the automotive environment. Improved system reliability is achieved through the use of the SDL.
