Described is a technique for teaching robotic vision applications using a robotic motion teach pendant, the keys of which are also associated with stored software relating to vision parameters. The primary data required for object acquisition and manipulation relate to threshold, object description and the desired relative position and orientation of the robot end effector and object. Threshold data represents where on the gray scale a pixel is called black or white. Three keys on the pendant are associated with determining threshold levels. One activates a subroutine which obtains an image from the camera and displays it in binary form. The other two keys increment and decrement, respectively, the threshold level. The appropriate keys are depressed until a desired threshold is obtained.
