The symmetrical reflex sensor system has a narrow gap 1 through which the light reflected from the object and emanating from light diodes 2, 3 is incident on phototransistor 4. The narrow gap leads to a high positioning accuracy in the X-direction, which may reach into the microscopic range, say, of paper roughness. The absence of optical lens systems affords a high tolerance in the Y-direction.
