This article describes an image scanner wherein an optical unit is moved in the direction of an optical path to select a resolution of a scanned image and in the direction of a line of a document to selectively scan a portion of a large document, and a test pattern is located on a document plane to detect the resolution and the position of the optical unit in the direction of the line of the document. Referring to Fig. 1, an optical unit 1 includes a CCD sensor array 2 and a lens 3. A line image on a document plane 4 covers a width of a regular document, such as A4 size document. The width of the document plane 4 corresponds to the width of a large document, such as A3 size document.
