A method is described for providing a communications network operator in a large network with timely Generic Alert data, reporting Local Area Network (LAN) errors in a Personal Computer (PC) in the network. This method permits reporting of LAN Data Link Control (DLC) errors to a Communications and System Management (C&SM) focal point product (typically a System/370 host). The data reported is in far greater detail than previously reported in other PC products and is in the Generic Alert data format. (Image Omitted) This method is based on Systems Network Architecture, C&SM Generic Alerts. This architecture defines the basic formats for Generic Alerts but does not define the Alerts needed to report LAN DLC errors. The formats presented in this method are to report LAN DLC errors from a PC.
