The use of sheet inverters in an automatic document feeder enables full-speed duplex copying of a duplex original document set and results in stacking of the original set in proper collated sequence. An automatic document feeder (ADF) is described, having a horizontal input tray 10 positioned above a horizontal copy platen 11. The input tray holds a collated set 12 of duplex original sheets with the odd numbered pages facing up and with the lowest numbered odd page located on top of the set. A set feeder 13 operates to feed the top sheet of the set in a horizontal direction 14 for copying. A first turnaround 15 receives the sheet from the set feeder and operates to reverse the direction of sheet movement by 180o, such that the sheet's odd numbered side faces down.
