This article describes a method by which a user may be able to recover data on an integrated hardfile prior to its replacement for a defective sector buffer. In a typical hardfile system where the controller and hardfile are separate items, a failure in the controller logic would be repaired by replacing the controller, and this action would not affect the customer data recorded on the hardfile. In the new arena of integrated controllers, the controller is actually a part of the hardfile. Thus, replacement of the defective controller requires a replacement of the hardfile and its data also. This results in complete loss of user data. One of the most common failures on controller cards is a defective sector buffer.
