Abstract

Distributed Services provides a many-to-one mapping scheme for user id's (UIDs) and group id's (GIDs). This allows simplification of the administrative problems associated with maintaining the network. But having this scheme causes problems in understanding for applications written to work in a local environment. To maintain compatibility with existing applications, three system calls, "stat," "chown," and "chgrp," need to hide the problems from the application. The main problem occurs in the many-to-one quality of the forward translates. The stat system call returns the owner's UID and GID to the caller.
