Hard Disk Marking System

The technique described comprises marking a hard disk substrate to show A and B side orientation without damaging or marking the major surface. As shown in the figure, using a three-bladed instrument 5, the substrates are marked by embedding a single notch 6 and double notches 7 into its side. The substrates 8 being in stacks of large quantities allow for repeatable markings of large batches at one time. The notches 6 and 7 show orientation by the double notch being on either the left or the right side of the single notch. These marks remain highly visible after sputtering or plating without damaging either major surface or the active layers deposited thereon.
