A technique is described whereby an input/output (I/O) exerciser test package provides a means of testing every feature of a low-end parallel bus (LEPB), such as used in the IBM PS/2. The test package consists of a test circuit card and a software driver, loaded from a diskette, so as to provide access to all signals available to any adapter option card to be installed in a personal system. The I/O exerciser circuit card has a number of programmable registers that allow reconfiguration under software control. The primary configuration is controlled by the mode register, so as to allow the I/O exerciser to appear as: a memory or I/O; a 32, 16 or 8 bit device; or a matched memory, default or extended LEPB bus cycle.
