A virtual diskette drive interface is described. The basis for the virtual diskette drive is the use of an existing diskette drive interface as the communications controller to a multi-drop local interconnect. The intent of this virtual diskette drive interface is to provide a low per-station cost and low interconnection cost primary/secondary station data transfer interface. Since all low-cost personal computers already have diskette drive adapters in them, this arrangement utilizes that existing hardware to perform a somewhat unsophisticated local interconnect. The station which utilizes a host computer hard disk resources for diskette data storage is referred to as the Dependent Workstation. The Host station which provides the storage resources is referred to as the Controlling Station.
