On printers using a ribbon with few colors to generate many colors, the colors not on the ribbon are obtained by combination of colors from the ribbon and overstriking with each color in that combination. On a printed document containing both the colors on the ribbon and the colors not on the ribbon, the areas colored with a single color from the ribbon are not as bright as areas colored by overstriking several colors from the ribbon. A technique to ensure that colors have equal brightness throughout a document is described. When it is desired to generate more colors than are available on the printer ribbon, a printer table should be used to control the printing of colors whether directly available from the ribbon or a combination of colors from the ribbon.
