This article describes a structured, universal natural-language generator for sophisticated target-language generation in machine translation systems. In contrast to the generation components of current machine translation systems, the described generator determines the shape of the target-language sentence in a series of well-defined stages, enabling deterministic yet highly flexible generation. (Image Omitted) The target-language generator, as shown in Fig. 1, includes: (1) a grammar planner which has four, strictly ordered modules accounting for different linguistic domains and (2) a deterministic generation grammar (grammar without optional rules).
