An Application Programming Interface/Communications Services (API/CS) 2 for user-written PC-DOS programs 3 allows access to a host via typical user-written programs or those supplied by various telecommunications vendors who wish to take advantage of API/CS and Open Communication Architecture. The services provided by API/CS include communications with the program 1 containing the host data transfer facility and CICS subsystems residing on a mainframe computer system. Data, such as product alerts, are forwarded to the host data transfer facility 1 for handling, while bulk file data are forwarded to a CICS transaction program at the host. The size of a bulk file can vary, usually from 5000 bytes to about 10,000 bytes.
