This article describes a way of implementing a distributed print server which does not require copying the print files to the printing node and which is able to report status of print jobs enqueued at remote nodes. The specific implementation discussed is built using the Distributed Services product which runs under the AIX operating system for IBM's RT PC. In order to place a print job on a print queue in a standalone print server, the print(1) command creates a file in the directory /usr/lpd/qdir. Each job in the print queue is represented by a separate file in /usr/lpd/qdir. This qdir file contains such information as: the print file name, the enqueuer's current directory, the enqueuer's uid and gid, the target queue and device.
